Periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis are serious infections that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. These gum diseases are chronic bacterial infections that affect the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Gum disease can affect one tooth or many teeth and it begins when bacteria in the plaque causes the gums to become inflamed. There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is considered to be the more mild form of gum disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage, there is very little to no discomfort and can often be caused by inadequate oral hygiene.
When gingivitis is left untreated, it progresses into periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line producing toxins that irritate the gums. The toxins encourage a chronic inflammatory reaction in which the body in essence turns on itself and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. What happens at this stage can destroy your gums and your smile entirely. Gums separate from the teeth forming spaces between teeth and gums that become infected. As the diseases continue, the spaces deepen and more tissue and bone are destroyed.
