Digital Dental X-Rays

Dental radiographs (X-rays) are essential preventative diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. At Martinez Dental Solutions, we use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Call us today to request an appointment for a thorough exam including dental X-rays.

Why Digital X-Rays?

Thanks to advances in technology, we are now able to use digital, instead of traditional film screen radiography. The use of digital x-rays has many advantages, including:

  • Less radiation: Digital x-rays use approximately 70% less radiation than traditional x-rays. The radiation exposure is very minimal and safe.
  • Better imaging: Digital x-rays offer more shades of grey than traditional x-rays, resulting in better-quality images.
  • More accurate: Better quality results in more details and, therefore, more accurate diagnosis.
  • Long lasting: The images are stored digitally, and don’t deteriorate over time, like a paper version.
  • Easier to share: Digital x-rays can be easily shared electronically (i.e. with insurance companies and other specialists).

X-Ray Services from Martinez Dental Solutions

The FMX consists of 18 radiographs. With this amount of information the dentist is able to diagnose decay, periodontal disease, abscesses, cysts and many more abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Bitewings are x-rays of the top and bottom teeth biting together. These are usually accompanied by periapical radiographs. A periapical x-ray is one that captures the whole tooth.

Dental cone beam radiography is a special type of X-ray machine used in situations where regular dental or facial X-rays are not sufficient. This type of CT scanner uses a special type of technology to generate three-dimensional (3D) images of dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths, and bones. Images obtained with cone beam radiography allow for more precise treatment planning.

This technology is useful for:

  • Surgical planning for implant placement
  • Diagnosing temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
  • Evaluation of the jaw, sinuses, nerve canals, and nasal cavity
  • Detecting, measuring, and treating jaw tumors
  • Determining bone structure and tooth orientation
  • Surgical planning for impacted teeth, including wisdom teeth
  • Locating the origin of pain or pathology

Panoramic dental radiographs are typically only taken as needed. They can offer a detailed view of the sinus areas as well as the nasal areas and mandibular nerve. These types of all-inclusive dental radiographs can:

  • Evaluate the progression of TMJ
  • Evaluate impacted teeth
  • Assist with treatment planning removable prosthesis and braces
  • And more

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

We are all exposed to natural radiation in our environment. The amount of radiation exposure from a full mouth series of X-rays is equal to the amount a person receives in a single day from natural sources.

Dental X-rays produce a low level of radiation and are considered safe. Our dentists take necessary precautions to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental teeth X-rays. These precautions include using lead apron shields to protect the body and using modern digital equipment that cuts down the exposure time of each X-ray.

How Often Should Dental X-rays Be Taken?

The need for dental X-rays depends on each patient’s individual dental health needs. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend necessary X-rays based on the review of your medical and dental history, dental exam, signs and symptoms, age consideration, and risk for disease.

A full mouth series of teeth X-rays is recommended for new patients and is usually good for three to five years. Bitewing X-rays (X-rays of the top and bottom teeth biting together) are taken at check-up visits and are recommended once or twice a year to detect new dental problems.
